Periodontal disease, also referred to as gum disease, is a common condition that regresses gum and health. It is often caused by the bacteria within plaque. As this plaque builds up and hardens, it can inflame and infect the gum tissues and if this is left untreated, can cause gum recession. Advanced periodontal disease can also lead to bone and tooth loss.

Signs of gum disease include red, tender, swollen, or bleeding gums. Loose teeth, painful chewing, increased sensitivity and halitosis can also be common symptoms. Remember that healthy gums do not bleed! Treatments are provided based on the severity of the gum disease and can include additional professional dental cleanings, improved at-home oral hygiene, antibiotic treatment, scaling and root planing (deep cleanings), or gum surgery.
